Betty Hawthorne

Betty Hawthorne, age 79, of Whigham, Georgia passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, at her home in Whigham. Services for Mrs. Hawthorne will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, August 4, in the Cadwell Chapel of Cox-Ivey Funeral Home. Pastor James Knight will officiate.

Betty Helms Hawthorne was born September 10, 1944 in Miller County, Georgia to Kenneth Thelma Helms and Erie Lily Jackson Helms. The child of a sharecropper, she grew up in the country. Betty was tough and knew how to work hard. She was of the Baptist faith. She dearly loved animals, especially dogs. Betty loved her coffee and loved to watch Westerns. Her family was her life. She will be missed.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Lori Knight (Mitch) of Whigham; step-daughter, Christy Knapp of Cairo, Georgia; siblings, Joe Helms (Pat) of Donalsonville, Georgia, Linda Dukes (David) of Colquitt, Georgia, and Danny Helms (Linda) of Colquitt; grandchildren, Stacey Knight (Brynn) and Jessica Bennett (Matt) all of Cairo; step-grandchild, Robin Knapp (Triston) of Cairo; great-grandchildren, Fletcher Knight, Corbin Knight, Jaxon Bennett, and Mylah Bennett; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Bonnie Church, and brothers, Ricky and Kenneth Helms.
