Catherine Battles Nelson, 74, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at her residence following a lengthy illness. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Danny Shepard, Rev. Paul Medley and Rev. Donna Bevels officiating. The interment at Oak City Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Ivey Funeral Home. Mrs. Nelson was born July 21, 1935 in Bainbridge, GA, the daughter of George Franklin Battles, Jr. and Hazel Wilson Battles. She was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and Florida State University. She taught music in the elementary schools of Decatur County for 24 years and taught private piano lessons in her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the D.A.R. She was preceded in death by her brother, G. Frank Battles, III. Survivors include her husband, Ken Nelson of Bainbridge, GA; her daughters, Pam Nelson Collins and her husband Mike of Cumming, GA, and Susan Nelson and her husband Gary White of Bainbridge, GA; her sisters, Susan B. Phinney and her husband Sandy of Canton, GA, and Margo B. Harrell and her husband Larry of Donalsonville, GA; her sister-in-law, Charlotte S. Battles of Bainbridge, GA; and three granddaughters, Melanie Upright, Katie Collins Thompson, and Naomi Coursey.
