David Williams

Mr. George David Williams, age 68, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2024, at his home in Bainbridge, Georgia. Services for Mr. Williams will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, August 26, 2024 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. David Grubbs will officiate. Jackson Kendrick, Quinton Horne, Mike Hall, George Reagan, Brett Sutton and Tommy Moore will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 25 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 p.m. in the Cadwell Chapel of Cox-Ivey Funeral Home.

George David Williams was born November 2, 1955 in Bainbridge, Georgia to John Byron Williams and Abbie Ree Gilbert Williams. As a child, David proved to be a talented musician. He took trumpet lessons from Dr. Ruth Still of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. He was a member of the Bainbridge High School marching band until his graduation in 1973. After graduation he attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a masters degree in Trumpet Performance. He lived, taught, and played in the Washington, D.C. area for the next 15 years. While in D.C., he played in the Washington Sinfonia and was principal trumpet in the Prince George Philharmonic. While he was a member the orchestra performed for Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush, Sr., 2 popes, and many other dignitaries. David and his wife, Myra Cowart Williams, shared a deep love and appreciation for music, and she accompanied him many times as he played during their 43 years of marriage. David served as a Baptist Deacon, taught Sunday School for many years, was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later directed the music ministry at Maranatha Baptist Church. He was instrumental in the start-up, and for many years directed, the Home School Band in Tallahassee. David owned Williams Music in Tallahassee. He taught music, restored and sold instruments.

Growing up on a peanut farm, he and his father loved to go hunting, and David was a really good shot. They hosted many of these outings, and entertained quite a few dignitaries. The late Georgia Governor Marvin Griffin was a frequent visitor. In the last few years, David’s health limited his movement. He had been unable to go hunting, but music has remained such a blessing in his life. A man of great faith, David deeply loved his family, and will be sorely missed by those who love him so very much.

David Williams is survived by his wife, Myra Cowart Williams of Bainbridge; his mother, Abbie Ree Gilbert Williams of Bainbridge; children, Michelle McMullen (Brett Sutton) of Thomasville, Georgia, Jennifer Williams (Sean Shrader) of Tallahassee, John David Williams of Bainbridge, and Charlotte Hall (Mike) of Raleigh, North Carolina; siblings, Gloria Hines, Rhonda Kendrick (David) and Paul Williams; grandchildren, Juliette Carlsson (Tomas), Lauren McMullen, and Wesley Hall; nieces and nephews, Shannon Reagan (George), Ben Hines (Jamie), Bowen Kendrick (Kaylee), and Jackson Kendrick (Laura Lee). He was preceded in death by his father, J.B. Williams and brother, Johnny Williams.
