Douglas D. Dean, 85, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 at his residence. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2014 at Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Poppell officiating. Interment will follow at Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with his nephews serving as active pallbearers. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church. Mr. Dean was born September 4, 1929, the son of the late Donnie David Dean and Lena Rebecca Dollar Dean. He was born and raised in Decatur County, GA. Shortly after school he began farming. He was the fourth generation Dean to farm in Decatur County. He was the Decatur County Young Farmer of The Year in 1963. During his career as a farmer, he continued to earn numerous awards including the highest corn yield in Georgia in 1976, a record that he held for three years. That same year, he had the second highest peanut yield in the state. As agriculture developed and changed, so did Mr. Dean. In 1989, he received national recognition in soil and water conservation. In 2008, the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee selected him as their Agricultural Man of the Year. Douglas Dean was also committed to serving the people of Georgia and Decatur County. During the 1970's, he served as director of the Georgia Peanut Commission and director for Production Credit Association for over 20 years. He served on the County Commission for over 10 years and tax assessor board for 4 years. Mr. Dean was a member of Black Jack Baptist Church. Douglas was an avid history buff and loved western movies. He will always be remembered for the love he gave his wife, family, and friends. Survivors include his wife of three years, Joan Brock Dean of Bainbridge, GA; his sons, Kerry Dean and his wife, Pam, of Climax, GA and Stanley Dean and his wife, Kelly, of Atlanta, GA; his daughters, Barbara Dean Powell and her husband, Rufus, of Bainbridge, GA and Krista Dean O'Brien and her husband, Dennis, of Savannah, GA; his step-daughter, Sheila Brock of Bainbridge, GA; his step-son, Hugh Brock of Bainbridge, GA; his brother, Cecil Dean and his wife, Mary, of Jacksonville, FL; his sister, Virginia Wooten and her husband, Donnie, of Climax, GA; his grandchildren, Jonathan Powell, Matt Powell, Brian Dean, Beth Dean Haberman, Josh Dean, Nikki Dean, Mitchell Dean, Patrick Dean, Reid O'Brien, Caroline O'Brien, Hugh Brock, Shirah Brown, LaDon Toole, and Brock Toole; and his great-grandchildren, Abigayle Powell, Evan Powell, Maggie Powell, Hannah Powell, Blake Powell, Haley Dean, Hannah Brock, Lacee Brock, Carson Brown, Aniston Brown, Bowan Brown, Landon Toole, Emma Grace Toole, Chloe Toole, Sophie Toole, and Dylan Toole. Douglas was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Joan Eidson Dean; and his brothers, Lawrence Dean, Otis Dean, Dewayne Dean and Tillman Dean.
