Elvie Coleman Samples, age 90, resident of Columbus, died on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Doctors Hospital. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 11 a.m. with Reverend Michael Heath officiating. Interment followed at Spring Creek Cemetery, Donalsonville, GA at 4 p.m. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, February 2, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. Mrs. Samples, daughter of the late Simon Peter Coleman and Emily Earl Poston, was born October 19, 1918 in Decatur County, GA. She was a homemaker and member of South Columbus Senior Center. She was also a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. Mrs. Samples was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan L. Samples; a son, Fred T. Knapp; two brothers, Alva Coleman and Billy Coleman; and a sister, Dora Belle Coleman. She is survived by one sister, Margaret Askew of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Mary Coleman of Columbia, SC.; two grandsons, Ronnie and Donnie Knapp; five nieces, Claudette Billings of Columbus, Peggie Hamilton and her husband Bill of Buena Vista, GA., Emily Grooms and her husband Danny of Summerville, SC., Phyllis Hughes and her husband Henry of Dorchester, SC., and Nancy Lee and her husband Teddy of Columbia, SC.; two nephews, Robert Coleman and his wife Liz of Chatsworth, GA., and Jeff Coleman of Panama City, FL.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and friends.
