Fred Mitchell, 97, of Donalsonville, GA, passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 at Seminole Manor Nursing Home. The graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p. m. on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Lakeland Memorial Gardens in Lakeland, FL with Dr. Harold Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p. m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Ivey Funeral Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to the Wiregrass Hospice, 432 E. Shotwell Street, Bainbridge, GA 39819. Mr. Mitchell was born February 8, 1913 in Athens, GA, the son of William Thomas Mitchell and Anna Dover Mitchell. He served in the U. S. Army from 1934 to 1956, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Mitchell was a Management Engineer in the Office of the Comptroller General before being transferred to the Army Hospital, followed by the Civilian Personnel Office, where he was promoted to Personnel Officer. After retiring and moving to Lakeland, FL, he was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, a Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Mystic Shrine. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Celista Runnels Mitchell; his brothers, Ted Mitchell, Jim Mitchell, and Hershell Mitchell; and his sister, Mamie Lomineck. Survivors include his sister, Ida Peterson of Atlanta, GA; and locally by his nephews, James P. Mitchell, Jr. and his wife Nell of Brinson, GA, Ed Mitchell and his wife Anne of Brinson, GA, and Richard Squires and his wife Debbie of Donalsonville, GA.
