Hazel Burbridge

Hazel Hooks Burbridge, age 87, passed away Monday, May 19, 2025, at her home in Whigham, Georgia. Services for Hazel will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 22, 2205, at Whigham Baptist Church in Whigham, Georgia. Mr. Frank Pritchett and Rev. DeWitt Phillips will officiate. Mike Nola, Jeffrey Mobley, Carl Harris, James Cason, and Glenn Rykard, Jr. will serve as pallbearers. Danny Harris and The Syrup Sisters of Cairo will serve as honorary pallbearers. The service will end at the church. Hazel will be privately interred in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service, beginning at 10:00 am.

Hazel Burbridge was born January 12, 1938, in Montgomery County, Georgia, to Lorenza Freedman Hooks and Ruth Horne Hooks Warren. She grew up near Brunswick, Georgia and graduated from Glynn Academy class of 1956. In 1972, she moved to Whigham and has been a huge part of that community ever since. For around 20 years she worked at Pinewood Nursing Home. Hazel loved each of the residents, worked hard, and gave them her best. Hazel was very community minded. She served as the president of the Pilot Club of Cairo more than once and enjoyed being a member of the Syrup Sisters of Cairo. She loved flowers and was a member of the Tropicana Garden Club that was in Whigham. A member of Whigham Baptist Church, she missed being out as she became homebound. Hazel was kind, caring, and loved all people. She was the backbone of her family and offered them her time and attention. She also served as protecter when necessary. Hazel will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Mrs. Burbridge is survived by her children, Cecil Maurice Rykard, Jr. (Connie) and Maurica Anne Rykard; grandchildren, Glenn Rykard, Amanda Rykard, Brittany Cason (James), Thomas Bowman (Cateasha); 8 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Bobby R. Rykard; sister-in-law Charlotte Hagemann; 8 nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; and loads of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenza Freedman Hooks and Ruth Horne Hooks Warren; husbands, Cecil Maurice Rykard, Sr. and Carl Burbridge; sons, Maurice Glenn Rykard, Sr. and Perry Latham Rykard; siblings, Jean Ellen Harris and husband, Danny Harris, Sr., Pearl Elizabeth (Peewee) Goodbread and husband John (Sonny) Goodbread; grandchildren, Benjamin Charles Rykard and Tiffany Elaine Rykard; great-grandchild, Michael Dickson; and niece, Catherine Ellen Brock.
