James Earl Smith, 90, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009 at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, GA due to complications of pneumonia. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stephen L. Webb officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 29, 2009 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . Mr. Smith was born in Bryantsville,Kentucky on April 8, 1919, the son of James Franklin Smith and Minnie Lee Baker Smith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired building contractor, having worked the last several years at BFM. Inc. He was a Boy Scout leader and volunteer for many years and a member of V.F.W. Post 4904. He was preceded in death by his wife, Merle McDowell Smith. Survivors include his daughter, Nell Smith Rich and her husband Ben of Stone Mountain, GA; his sister, Louise Sturgis of Perry, GA; and his grandson, Jeff Rich of Stone Mountain, GA.
