John L. Boyd, 78, of Brinson, GA, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Archbold Medical Center. The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Medley, Rev. Earl Barron, and Rev. Art Bruce officiating. Interment to follow at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery with Nelson Harrell, Charles Moore, James Brock, Dennis Mock, John Hansford, and Gene Powell serving as active pallbearers and the Baraca Sunday School Class serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 401 E. Shotwell Street, Bainbridge, GA 39817. Mr. Boyd was born October 8, 1929 in Early County, GA, the son of John Preston Boyd and Emma Rouse Boyd. He served in the United States Army and retired as Assistant Fire Chief of Bainbridge. He was a former member of the American Legion and was a Mason with Orion Masonic Lodge No. 8 F.&A.M. Mr. Boyd was a member of First Baptist Church, the Baraca Sunday School Class, and the Saints Alive Choir. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Julia M. Boyd of Brinson, GA; his son, Russell Boyd and his wife Christie of Bainbridge, GA; his daughter, Shari Griffin and her husband Daryl of Bainbridge, GA; his brother Herbert Boyd and his wife Eudene of Brinson, GA; his sister, Virginia Hatcher and her husband Buck of Albany, GA; six grandchildren, McKay Griffin, Preston Griffin, Summer Boyd, Parker Boyd all of Bainbridge, GA, Sabrina Cannon and her husband Jonathan of Thomasville, GA, and Amber McLane and her husband Adam of Bainbridge, GA; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew Cannon and Matthew Cannon both of Thomasville, GA and Samuel McLane and Savannah McLane both of Bainbridge, GA.
