Laverne Smith Gay, 59, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 at her residence with her family by her side. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Grace Church with Pastor Andy McQuaid officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Laverne was born October 3, 1950 in Donalsonville, GA, the daughter of Canies Smith and Thelma Worthington Smith. She attended West Bainbridge High School and was a hairdresser in Bainbridge for over 30 years. Her battle with cancer over the last 32 years is a testament to her strength and fortitude. She survived metastatic breast cancer longer than anyone else known in the world. She was a member of Grace Church. Laverne had a great love for her family, friends, co-workers and customers. Survivors include her husband Tommy Gay of Bainbridge, GA; two sons, Kyle Odom and his wife Katie of Donalsonville, GA and Matt Gay and his wife Ashley of Bainbridge, GA; two daughters, Kim Gullage and her husband Robby of Aiken, SC and Erin Whiddon and her husband Doug of Gainesville, GA; her sister, Linda Hatton and her husband Glenn of Donalsonville, GA; two brothers, Jimmy Smith and his wife Joan and Milton Smith and his wife Julia, all of Donalsonville, GA; 8 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a special aunt, Mary Ellen Lisenby of Donalsonville, GA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
