Mrs. Mary Lightfoot Nichols, 86, of Norcross, GA passed away Sunday, December 9, 2007 at her residence. The graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Elcan-Nichols lot in Oak City Cemetery with Reverend Richard Hill officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at the home of John and Lesley Simmons, 221 Woodhull Rd., Bainbridge, GA. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . Mrs. Nichols was born April 3, 1921 in Bainbridge, Georgia and lived there until 1988. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.Grigg Elcan of Bainbridge and the widow of the late Dr. Jake W. Nichols, who practiced dentistry in Bainbridge for forty-one years. Mrs. Nichols was the first state president of the National Beta Club of Georgia, an honor graduate of Agnes Scott College and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. During her years in Bainbridge, she was active in many phases of the civic, cultural and religious life of the community. A member of Roswell Presbyterian Church when she died, she was previously a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge and for many years a teacher of the Ward Bible Class. She was a past president of the American Association of University Women and the Bainbridge Book Club. For many years, she worked as a trainer of leaders for the Girls Scouts of America. For thirty years she was a member of the Board of the Southwest Georgia Regional Library, serving as treasurer, secretary and chairman of that board. She also served on the Board of the Bainbridge Junior College Foundation. Mrs. Nichols is survived by her daughter, Lawre Nichols McDaniel of Norcross, Ga., her son William Flynt Nichols II and daughter-in-law Susan Richardson Nichols of Shalimar, Fl., grandchildren Jerry Bradley McDaniel and his wife Amy Golletti McDaniel of Cumming, Ga., Melissa McDaniel May and her husband Richard Suber May of Quincy, Fl., and Geoffrey Jake Nichols of Shalimar, Fl. and three great-grandchildren, Hallie and Ryan McDaniel and Lawre Bradley May.
