Memorial services for Liz Tannhauser, 65, of Climax, GA will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge with Dr. Gerald A. Little officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, April 2, 2010 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . Liz died March 28, 2010, in Bainbridge, Georgia. Born May 23, 1944 in Bainbridge, the daughter of John U. Tannhauser of Stuttgart Germany and Mirian Townsend Tannhauser of Climax, GA, she was a graduate of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD and Queens College in Charlotte, NC, later receiving her Master's Degree from the University of Maryland. Upon graduation from Queens College, Liz began a thirty-year teaching career with Maryland's Montgomery County public school system retiring from her final position as the Principal of Cashell Elementary in Olney, MD. After retiring from teaching, Liz moved to Climax to make her home and work with her family to oversee the continued preservation of the family home at Curry Hill. Known in the family and out, as the organizer and the program director, Liz was a church elder and became heavily involved with the Sunday school programs at the First Presbyterian Church. She served as the executive director of Keep Decatur County Beautiful (winning both the 2005 Keep America and Keep Georgia Beautiful Affiliate of the year awards), was named 2005 Decatur County Woman of the Year, and assisted in organizing the annual Women's Retreat. In addition to her community involvement, Liz traveled with friends to the Canadian Rockies, England and the Curry ancestral home in Scotland as well as a long sojourn to a Villa in Tuscany and an extensive tour of Italy. Survivors include her sister, Margaret Tannhauser Hucks of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; her cousins, Louisa Martin of Tallahassee, FL, Leonor Blum of Baltimore, MD, Frank Bowne of Annapolis, MD, Mary Jane Wells of Climax, GA, Mary Townsend of Louisville, OH, and Henry Townsend of Dublin, GA, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 7067, Bainbridge, GA 39818.
