Oscar Godwin

Oscar R. Godwin, 91, of Attapulgus, GA, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at his residence. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Attapulgus Church of God with Rev. Billy Dawson, Rev. Daniel Tomberlin, Rev. Phillip Kirkland, Jimmy (Jimbo) Godwin, and Rev. Charles Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Attapulgus Cemetery with Drew Godwin, Wade Godwin, Matt Godwin, Jimbo Godwin, Jeff Rampy and Bobby Dickens serving as active pallbearers and Ralph Stewart, Terry Haire, Tommy Haire, Wayne Haire, J.T. Ulmer, Willie Barrentine, Bryan Benton and Billy Benton serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday, June 27, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home. Mr. Godwin was born September 29, 1916 in Decatur County, GA, the son of Thomas Pierce Godwin and Ethel Wheeler Godwin. He retired from Engelhard after 36 years, he was a charter member of Attapulgus Church of God and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Godwin was preceded in death by his first wife, Kate Chason Godwin, his son, Jimmy Godwin, his daughter, Eva Joyce Godwin, his brother, Allen T. Godwin and his sister, Mable Gillespie. Survivors include his wife of twenty-five years, Katie J. Godwin of Attapulgus, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Cheryl Godwin of San Diego, CA and Steve and Nancy Godwin of Climax, GA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Lamar Hand of Calhoun, GA and Linda G. and E. Butch Weathersby of Leesburg, GA; three sisters, Cora Lee Bullock, Hazel Hartsfield and Iva Merle Elkins; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
