Richard Tharpe

Mr. Richard Melton Tharpe, Sr., age 92, of Attapulgus, Georgia, passed away Monday, August 14, 2017, in Tallahassee, Florida. Services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at Attapulgus Baptist Church. Pastor Jerry Bishop will officiate. Mr. Tharpe will be buried in Attapulgus Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Melton Tharpe was born February 3, 1925, in Bristol, Florida, to George Tharpe and Emma Elizabeth Tharpe. He worked as a mechanic at Engelhard until his retirement. Mr. Tharpe proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. Melton married the love of his life, Mary Virginia Gunn Tharpe, who passed away in 1987. Mr. Tharpe was a member of Attapulgus Baptist Church. Richard Melton Tharpe, Sr. is survived by his son, Richard Melton Tharpe, Jr. and wife, Kimberly of Tallahassee and nieces, Judy Greenwald, Loretta Weaver, and Debbie Tharpe.
