Roy Sawyer

Roy Garrett Sawyer, Jr., 93, of Douglas, GA, went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2015. Roy was born on March 3, 1922 in Seminole County, GA. He was the son of Roy Garrett Sawyer and Gladys Norman Sawyer. He is survived by his devoted sons Timothy Sawyer and wife Carol of Douglas, GA and Joel Sawyer and wife Sally of Orlando, FL; his grandchildren, Andrew Sawyer and wife Kathryn of Thomasville, GA, Jennie Sawyer Murphy and husband Bradley of Simpsonville, SC, Mark Sawyer of Augusta, GA, and Sarah Sawyer of Orlando, FL; his siblings, Norman Sawyer of Brinson, GA, Hilda Duvall of Reynoldsville, GA, Betty Vedder Harris and husband Bob of Forsyth, GA, and Saundra Hill Rogers of Reynoldsville, GA; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years Juanita Finchum Sawyer and his parents. Roy had a long and successful career with Delta Airlines in aircraft maintenance. He began as a mechanic in 1946 and moved up the ranks to retire after 40 years, as General Foreman of Technical Operations. Mr. Sawyer was a devout Christian. He served as a youth Sunday School Teacher, Boy Scout Leader, and Deacon at First Baptist Church of College Park. His last years were spent as a member of First Baptist Church of Douglas. He enjoyed reading the Bible, sharing the Gospel, and ministering to others. He took a genuine interest in people and was loved by many. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2015 at Bethany Baptist Church with Dr. Shep Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, prior to the service. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com .
