Mr. Thomas Vance Mattis, Sr. died Sunday, September 11, 2011, at Bainbridge Healthcare Center in Bainbridge, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Eastside Baptist Church in Cairo, Georgia. The Rev. Dr. Paul Jones will be officiating. Thomas Vance Mattis was born June 16, 1931 in Learned, Mississippi to Joseph and Clara Berryhill Mattis. Tom and his wife, Mary Garner Mattis, lived most of their lives in Pensacola, Florida. Tom was self employed; running a dry cleaning business. After retirement, they moved to Mobile, Alabama and then, after the loss of his wife, Tom moved to Cairo to be with his son. He was a member of Moffit Road Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. His favorite pastime was fishing. Tom Mattis is survived by his son, Thomas Vance Mattis, Jr. and wife, Kathleen, of Cairo, Georgia; sisters, Jewel Eady and husband, James, of Jackson, Mississippi and Christine Stoneberger of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Tommy and Sarah Mattis of Cairo, Georgia, Stephanie Skelton of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bonnie Skelton of Pensacola, Florida, and Sly Reddick of Gulf Shores, Alabama; and 4 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughters, Sherry Skelton and Brenda Reddick; brother, Joe Mattis ; and sister, Joann Barlow.
