Mr. Thomas Wesley Cleveland (Sandy) Phinney, Jr., age 79, passed away on March 25, 2024 in Dalton, Georgia. Graveside services for Mr. Phinney will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2024 in Oak City Cemetery, Bainbridge, Georgia, with Rev. Stephen Webb officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Thomas Wesley Cleveland (Sandy) Phinney, Jr. was born on April 29, 1944 in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Phinney was the son of Thomas Wesley Cleveland Phinney, Sr. and Jo Helen Daniel Phinney. On March 24, 1962, in Aiken, South Carolina, he married Susan Deborah Battles, the daughter of George Franklin Battles, Jr., and Hazel Lucille Wilson. She was born on January 12, 1944 in Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia. Mrs. Phinney passed away on July 2, 2016 in Canton, Cherokee County, Georgia and is interred in Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge. Wes Phinney, Jr. graduated from Auburn University in August 1966 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree. Phi Eta Sigma, Chi Epsilon, and Tau Beta Pi honoraries were earned. Initially employed by Humble Oil and Refining, Wes worked with the oil industry in operations support for Texaco’s International Aviation Sales until his retirement. Domiciles included Memphis, Tennessee, Shreveport, Louisiana, Tampa, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. Wes was an avid fan of Auburn athletics. He was inspired by his mother-in-law to look into his family geneology. He had traced every branch and their extended family branches back to when they first came to America from Ireland. He has passed his passion for geneology on to others in his family. Mr. Phinney is survived by his sons, Thomas Wesley Cleveland Phinney, III (Jennifer) and Corbett Battles Phinney (Kim McBrayer); grandchildren, Emeline Elizabeth Phinney, Katherine Daniel Phinney, Margaret May Phinney, Zachary Tyler Phinney, Bret Alexander Phinney, and Thomas James Phinney.
