Vessie Brinson Newberry, 84, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Medley and Pastor Tim Dean officiating. A private graveside service will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens with Garrett Cribb, Blake Brock, Scott Stanley, Frank Kay, Jim Shingler, and Eddie Sharber will serve as active pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014 at Ivey Funeral Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com . Mrs. Newberry was born June 6, 1929 in Bainbridge, GA, the daughter of Lonnie Benjamin Duke and Mattie Mae Martin Duke. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1947 and was a retired dispatcher with Georgia Power Company. Mrs. Newberry was an active member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class and the Saints Alive Choir. Survivors include her daughters, Paula Brinson of Bainbridge, GA, Melba Brinson Kay and her husband, Frank, of Bainbridge, GA, and Janet Brinson Brock of Bainbridge, GA; her sister, Sara Duke Maddox of Port St. Joe, FL; her sister-in-law, Joan Byrd Duke of Cincinnati, OH; her grandchildren, Dana Anderson Stokes of Bainbridge, GA, Scott Stanley of Tallahassee, FL, Garrett Cribb of Bainbridge, GA, Blake Brock of Bainbridge, GA, and Shay Stanley Shingler of Donalsonville, GA; and her great-grandchildren, Brendon Kay, Liam Shingler and Emily Brock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Newberry; her daughter, Lynn Brinson; and her brothers, Milton Duke and Edward Duke.
